Introduction

Bikers have almost become synonymous with charity.  We have big hearts and give generously to all sorts of charitable organisations such as the disabled, the aged, the kids, animals, etc.  However we sometimes neglect our own community:

The community of Bikers.

The West Rand Biking Association President Council (WRBA PC) have embarked on a charity project specifically for bikers.  We need to take care of our own! There is a definite need and we, the bikers, need to do something about it!

Inevitably in life we meet with challenges that could put us on a path to self-destruction.  It may happen that a brother is removed from his family, looses his job, have an encounter with the police and have to serve some jail time or just very down on luck.

Before becoming completely destitute, the biking community by way of the West Rand Bikers House – The Workshop, can lend a helping hand to get a brother back on his feet and on the right track.

If your bike meets with an accident is in need of a service or repair you take it to a bike workshop where qualified people can take care of it and restore it to its original, and sometimes even better condition.  West Rand Biker House - The Workshop aims to do exactly this, but for biker brothers in need.  Broken and injured lives need to be fixed!

What is The Workshop?

It is a safe house that caters for bikers in need.  This Workshop provides temporary refuge at no financial cost to the biker.  All costs to run The Workshop is carried by donators.  This includes the mortgage,  water and lights, food, counsellors and all other related costs.

The Workshop is a place of help and refuge regarding physical and spiritual needs.  Counselling and Life Skills sessions are offered to the residents.  The Workshop is not a “holiday resort” - it is a place where the opportunity is offered to take a break from  life to sort stuff out.

There are strict rules and regulations that will have to be adhered to and that the residents need to live by.

How is it run?

The Biker House Committee in conjunction with the WRBA PC oversees the running of the Workshop.

This committee meets on a regular basis according to governing legislation.

There is a couple living in the house acting as "house parents".  They carry the responsibility of the daily running and keeping of the house - preparing meals, cleaning, washing, etc. They look after our brothers living there.  Tasks and daily house chores are assigned to every resident as part of condition to stay.

Bikers receive counselling and guidance on getting their life back on track and to become self-supporting once again.  Counselling offered include self discipline and motivation, anger and conflict management, financial and budget planning, spiritual and physical well being,

Who will qualify?

Any brother that is a patch wearer of a Biking Council affiliated club.  The president of the particular club nominates such a club member in need.  The nominations are presented to the Biker House Committee  where a decision is made on acceptance and the duration of the ‘benefit’ and assistance.  The duration of stay varies between three to six months depending on the circumstances. Every case is is judged on merit.

Governance & Compliance

The Welfare Chairperson of the WRBA PC, Karin Basson, has endless experience in running similar facilities.   Karin takes care of all the compliance and governance issues.  All monies and contributions are managed by the Biker House Committee under leadership of the Chair Person. The accounts are audited and open to scrutiny.

It is a way to give something back to the biking community and to assist a fellow biker, a brother in need. Who knows, maybe one day one of us will be in the need and there is someone that can lend a helping hand…

Proverbs 19:17

“He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward him for what he has done.” - Think about it!
